Your child's first dental visit: when to go and what to expect 2

Earlier than most parents think. Here's why the first visit should happen by age one, what actually happens in the chair, and how to make it a happy memory.

Most dental problems start small and quiet. A tiny cavity or the first signs of gum disease rarely hurt, which is exactly why they're easy to miss. A regular checkup and cleaning is the easiest way to catch these issues while they're still simple, comfortable and affordable to treat.

What happens during a checkup

Your visit starts with a quick catch-up. We update your health history and ask how your teeth and gums have been feeling. Then Dr. Khubnani carries out a complete exam of your teeth, existing fillings, bite and jaw.

If they're due, we take digital X-rays. These let us see between teeth and below the gumline, where most hidden problems start. We only take X-rays when your history calls for them.

We also measure your gums to check for early gum disease and do a quick, painless oral cancer screening of your mouth, tongue and throat.

What a professional cleaning involves

Even great brushers build up tartar, a hardened plaque that a toothbrush can't remove. During your cleaning, we gently remove plaque and tartar from every surface, including along and just under the gumline. We finish with a polish that lifts everyday surface stains and leaves your teeth feeling smooth.

If your gums are sensitive, tell us. We can slow down, adjust our technique or numb the area so you stay comfortable.

Why regular visits matter

  • Catch problems early. A small cavity found today is quicker and easier to fix than a large one found next year.
  • Protect your gums. Removing tartar helps prevent gum disease, a leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
  • Keep your smile bright. Polishing removes stains from coffee, tea and everyday foods.
  • Avoid costly surprises. Prevention almost always costs less than repair.

How often should you come in?

Most patients do well with a checkup and cleaning every six months. If you're prone to gum problems or cavities, we may suggest more frequent visits.
