Sedation dentistry

Nervous about the dentist? You're not alone, and we'll never judge you for it. Gentle sedation, combined with a patient, unhurried approach, helps you get the care you need while feeling calm.

Who sedation can help

  • Dental anxiety or fear: if worry has kept you away from the dentist.
  • Strong gag reflex: making cleanings and X-rays easier to manage.
  • Longer treatments: such as several fillings or a root canal in one visit.
  • Sensitive teeth: or difficulty getting fully numb.
  • Trouble sitting still: for long periods in the chair.
  • A bad past experience: a fresh start with a team that listens.

Our sedation options

Nitrous oxide ("laughing gas"): you breathe it through a small nose mask. It helps you feel relaxed within minutes and wears off quickly after treatment, so you can usually drive yourself home.

Oral sedation: a prescribed pill taken before your appointment helps you feel deeply relaxed. You stay awake and can respond, but you may remember little of the visit. You'll need someone to drive you home.

Your visit, step by step

  1. Tell us how you feel: mention it when you book so we can plan extra time.
  2. Consultation: we review your health history and medications, and recommend the right option for you.
  3. Before your visit: we give you clear instructions, such as whether to eat beforehand or arrange a ride home.
  4. During treatment: we monitor you throughout, explain each step and pause whenever you need.
  5. Recovery: you rest until you're ready to go, and we follow up afterwards.

Comfort beyond sedation

  • We explain before we act: no surprises, ever.
  • You're in control: raise a hand at any time for a break.
  • Unhurried appointments: we book extra time so nothing feels rushed.
  • Small steps: we can start with the simplest treatment to build trust.

Is sedation safe?

Yes, when it's prescribed and monitored by a trained dental team. We review your medical history and medications before recommending any sedation, and we monitor you throughout your visit.

Cost & coverage

Coverage for sedation varies between plans. We'll check yours and include sedation in your written estimate before your visit.

FAQ

Will I be asleep? With nitrous oxide and oral sedation, you stay awake but feel very relaxed.

Can I drive home afterwards? Usually yes after nitrous oxide. After oral sedation, you'll need someone to drive you.

Can children have sedation? Nitrous oxide is often used for children. We'll discuss what's appropriate for your child.

Is sedation right for me? We'll decide together at your consultation, based on your health history and how you feel.

I'm embarrassed about how long it's been. Should I still come? Absolutely. We see nervous patients every week, and our only goal is to help you feel comfortable again.
